The Essential Punch List for Custom Homes: Living Stone's Unique Approach In custom home building, attention to detail is crucial to delivering a home that meets and exceeds client expectations. A vital tool in ensuring every aspect of the project is completed to the highest standard is the punch list. This document serves as a final checklist of tasks that need addressing before the project is deemed complete. Understanding how to effectively create and manage a punch list is essential for both builders and homeowners. Understanding the Punch List A punch list is compiled near the end of a construction project. It outlines all the items that do not conform to the contract specifications agreed upon by the builder and the homeowner. These items can range from minor cosmetic defects to incomplete installations. The punch list ensures: Comprehensive Review: All aspects of the home are inspected thoroughly. Clear Communication: Builders and clients are on the same page regarding outstanding tasks. Accountability: Responsibilities are assigned to address each item promptly. Creating a Punch List: General Guidelines While the specifics may vary, creating an effective punch list generally involves the following steps: Final Walkthrough: The builder and homeowner conduct a detailed inspection of the property together. Identify Issues: Document any discrepancies, defects, or unfinished work that need correction. Categorize Items: Organize the list by rooms or categories to streamline the correction process. Assign Responsibility: Determine who is responsible for each task, whether it's a subcontractor or a team member. Set Deadlines: Establish realistic timelines for completing each item. Follow-Up Inspections: After corrections are made, verify that all items meet the agreed-upon standards. Finalize Documentation: Once all items are addressed, both parties sign off to acknowledge completion. Living Stone's Unique Approach to the Punch List At Living Stone Design + Build, the punch list is more than a procedural step—it's an integral part of our commitment to delivering homes that embody quality, sustainability, and personalized craftsmanship. Our approach distinguishes us from other custom home builders in several key ways. Integrated Design-Build Process Our integrated design-build approach ensures seamless communication and coordination throughout the project. By combining architectural design, construction, and interior design under one umbrella, we: Minimize Errors: Early collaboration reduces the likelihood of issues arising that would need to be listed on a punch list. Enhance Efficiency: Streamlined processes lead to faster identification and resolution of potential problems. Improve Quality Control: Continuous oversight from a unified team maintains high standards at every stage. Proactive Quality Assurance Quality is ingrained in every aspect of our work. We implement proactive measures to ensure that by the time the punch list is created, only minimal items remain: Regular Inspections: Conducting consistent checks during construction to catch and address issues promptly. Attention to Detail: Our team focuses on craftsmanship, ensuring that finishes and installations meet our exacting standards. Client Involvement: We keep clients informed and involved, so adjustments can be made in real-time, reducing surprises at the end. Commitment to Sustainability and Health Living Stone is dedicated to building homes that are not only beautiful but also promote healthier living: Use of Non-Toxic Materials: We select materials that contribute to better indoor air quality. Energy Efficiency: All our homes are Energy Star Certified and NC Green Built Certified, reflecting our commitment to sustainability. Universal Design Principles: Incorporating features that make homes accessible and functional for all life stages. These commitments mean that our punch list often includes checks to ensure these elements are executed flawlessly, reinforcing the home's longevity and the well-being of its occupants. Personalized Service through the Eight Levels of Service Our Eight Levels of Service provide a comprehensive, client-focused experience: Partner by Design: Collaborating with a team tailored to each project's needs. Priced by Design: Aligning the client's vision with their budget. Age by Design: Incorporating design features that accommodate all life stages. Green by Design: Ensuring environmentally responsible building practices. Interiors by Design: Offering interior design services that complement the architectural style. Build by Design: Applying a thoughtful and efficient building process. Furnishing by Design: Assisting with selecting furnishings that enhance the home's design. Maintenance by Design: Providing preventative maintenance programs for the home's longevity. During the Build by Design phase, our approach to the punch list is characterized by: Client Education: We explain what to expect and how we address any issues. Transparency: Open communication about timelines and responsibilities. Dedicated Follow-Up: Ensuring that every item is completed to the client's satisfaction. The Living Stone Difference What sets Living Stone apart is our unwavering commitment to building happier, healthier lives. Our approach to the punch list reflects this philosophy: Holistic Perspective: We view the punch list as a tool to perfect the home, not just complete it. Client Relationships: Building lasting relationships with clients through trust and exceptional service. Continuous Improvement: Learning from each project to refine our

Living Stone Design + Build: Honored to Be Featured in Construction Business Review At Living Stone Design + Build, we are thrilled to share some exciting news—we’ve recently been featured in Construction Business Review, an authoritative publication in the construction industry that recognized us for our innovative and holistic approach to sustainable custom home building. This feature celebrates our dedication to building happier, healthier lives through thoughtful design, sustainable practices, and a commitment to excellence. This recognition is a humbling reminder of how far we’ve come in our 30-year journey of redefining the home-building experience. As the NAHB 2023 Custom Home Builder of the Year, we’ve set a precedent for how homes can be more than just shelters—they can be spaces that foster well-being, energy efficiency, and a commitment to sustainability. In this blog post, we’ll walk you through the highlights of the article and how it reflects our mission to create homes and lives that are not only beautiful but also healthier for both our clients and the environment. A Vision Rooted in Whole Living Central to our mission is the concept of Whole Living. At Living Stone Design + Build, we believe that sustainability goes beyond simply using energy-efficient materials or green certifications; it’s about crafting homes that enhance the health and well-being of their occupants. This philosophy is what drives every project we take on. While other builders may stop at energy efficiency, we go further—integrating toxin-free materials, improving indoor air quality, and addressing environmental sustainability in every step of the process. Sean and Laura Sullivan, who co-lead our company, have worked tirelessly to ensure that every home we build reflects the Whole Living approach. Whether it’s the structural design or the carefully selected furnishings from our sister company, Atelier Maison & Co., every decision is made with the goal of creating spaces that promote balance, health, and sustainability. Leadership That Sets Us Apart Our President, Sean Sullivan, is more than just a builder—he’s a visionary and leader in the construction industry. As an Accredited Master Builder and Certified Green Professional, Sean has consistently pushed boundaries to elevate home-building standards. Sean's leadership extends well beyond Living Stone Design + Build. He has served as president of both the local Home Builders Association and the North Carolina Home Builders Association, using these platforms to influence how homes are designed and built across the state. One of his most impactful contributions has been through education. Sean develops and teaches courses for other builders, sharing real-world insights from Living Stone projects. As highlighted in the Construction Business Review article, Sean’s continuing education initiatives help other builders adopt sustainable practices and foster positive change across the industry. Collaboration Across Disciplines One of the most unique aspects of Living Stone Design + Build is the seamless integration of services across three exceptional companies—our construction company, Laura Sullivan’s ID.ology Interiors & Design, and our green furniture studio, Atelier Maison & Co. The collaboration among these companies ensures that not only are the homes we build environmentally sustainable, but every detail inside the home—from the paint to the furniture—aligns with non-toxic and health-conscious principles. For instance, while energy-efficient, green-certified homes are vital, our commitment doesn’t stop there. As Sean Sullivan shared in the article, homes that use toxic materials or off-gassing furniture can compromise clients' health. By addressing these challenges, we’re able to provide a truly holistic solution. A Case Study in Sustainable Living Our feature in Construction Business Review highlights a particularly inspiring case study demonstrating how our philosophy translates into real results for our clients. When a Chicago resident approached us with severe health issues caused by black mold exposure in her previous home, she sought our expertise to build a healthier, toxin-free living environment in North Carolina. In response, we created a home certified under the “Wellness Within Your Walls” program—the first of its kind in the state. To achieve this, we focused on ten key sustainability categories, including air and water quality, sustainable site practices, and an emphasis on health-focused materials. The result wasn’t just a home—it was a sanctuary; a place where our client could thrive again. A Personalized Approach to Every Home Every client is unique, and so is every home we build. That’s why we’ve developed a 19-step process that ensures every detail is thoughtfully considered, from the initial conversations to the conclusion of the warranty. This comprehensive approach allows us to tailor our services to meet program-driven priorities (whether focused on specific needs or desires) or budget-driven constraints—all without compromising on quality or sustainability. We believe the home-building process should be collaborative and enjoyable. With our eight levels of service, clients can rest assured that every step of their journey is supported by industry-leading expertise. Expanding Our Reach While Asheville and the mountains of North Carolina

Living Stone Design + Build Featured in House Beautiful's 2024 Whole Home We’re excited to share that House Beautiful has featured Living Stone Design + Build in its seventh annual Whole Home project! Our latest home, a 4,000-square-foot contemporary mountain retreat, is located in Hendersonville’s conservation-minded Sprout community and showcases work from design teams all over the country. A Project with a Purpose Each year, House Beautiful picks a new place to bring unique design ideas to life. This time, they chose the Blue Ridge Mountains, captivated by the Asheville area’s art scene, food culture, and beautiful landscapes. However, their experience in our community took an unexpected turn. Just as the team wrapped up, Hurricane Helene hit western North Carolina, causing serious damage and changing the project’s story. Though our Whole Home build stood strong, other parts of the area didn’t fare as well. Roads, homes, and many community spaces were impacted. The experience reinforced the power of community and the importance of building sustainably—values at the heart of this project. A Focus on Sustainability Our featured home combines energy efficiency with comfort. Equipped with a Trane heating and cooling system, the house keeps energy usage low while ensuring comfort year-round. Every design element, from the materials used to the home’s layout, was chosen with intention. Working closely with the many designers, we created a space that feels natural and inviting. A Community Effort This home couldn’t have been built without the dedication of our local partners and trades. From project managers to painters, everyone brought commitment and skill to the project. We’re especially grateful to House Beautiful and the brand partners who contributed to making this vision possible. Rebuilding and Moving Forward As the region recovers from the storm, House Beautiful has pledged support to local rebuilding efforts, encouraging visitors to experience the Blue Ridge area when the time is right. For now, you can explore our project here, and in the November/December issue of House Beautiful, available on newsstands starting November 26. Thank you to everyone involved and to our clients and community for their continued support. We’re proud to share this project and the story of resilience it has come to represent.

Our Charity Partners Black Mountain Home One of our valued charity partners, Black Mountain Home for Children, Youth, and Families, has shared updates amidst the recent events. We are relieved to hear that all staff and youth are safe and accounted for, and they extend their gratitude for the continued support and prayers. Like much of Black Mountain, their campus was significantly impacted. If you are looking for ways to give aid, they have set up a disaster relief fund here. For those inquiring about additional ways to help, there is an urgent need for large potable water storage units, they are in need of gas to run generators, non-perishable food items, and paper products. To manage logistics effectively and ensure the security of the children, please send a private message through their Facebook Page including your name, any group affiliation, phone number, and email. Arrangements for drop-offs will be scheduled through this communication, and they kindly ask that visits to their campus be prearranged and approved. Western Carolina Rescue Ministries According to their most recent update on September 30th, while the Mission currently has power, they don't have water. Despite these challenges, they continue their essential work of cooking and providing for both residents and the homeless community.
